Another Happy Customer!

I have been trying to find a speedometer cable for my son's 1990 Ford Probe for months. "No one makes it anymore" is what I was told.

Looked here at RockAuto.com and there it was. and at a great price. Thanks RockAuto.com!

Repair Mistakes & Blunders

Ouch!

Six months ago my father and I bought a 1973 Cadillac Eldorado convertible to restore together in our spare time. We live in the Netherlands so the parts we needed are not as easy to get as in the U.S. RockAuto was a great solution for us. Cheap and fast!

So we got the engine running, the transmission complete, and lots of other problems solved. Last week we were working on the exhaust while the car was on the lift. At 9 p.m. we put out the lights and closed the door of the garage. At 7 a.m. the next morning my father called me, pretty upset, to tell me our Caddy had fallen off the lift! I came as fast as I could, and indeed, there it hung, the front bumper on the floor and the rear wheels two meters up in the air. I was completely shocked!

When we tried to figure out how this could have happened the problem appeared quickly. The safety lock on the front of the lift wasn’t adjusted properly, so only the stands on the back were fully locked. The weight of the car put the front end down so the lift wasn’t level anymore. The car’s transmission was in Park, but we didn’t use the parking brake. Also there were no blocks in front of the wheels. Expensive lesson! But still we are not complaining that much, only the front fenders and one of the two vertical bumper guards were damaged. Could have been a lot worse!

So everybody be smarter than us. Use wheel blocks and the parking brake! And double check all the locks on your lift.

Mystery Ford part with F33F 9B989 stamped on it

Is that part a temperature sensor for the car you sold two years ago or the knock sensor you bought for your wife’s van? Is your car running poorly and perhaps the black doohickey making unusual clicking sounds is responsible? Do you wonder if that oil filter will fit your mom’s Toyota?

The RockAuto catalog might be able to help identify mystery parts on your car or on the shelves in your shop. The catalog is a useful cross-reference tool that often includes both the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) part numbers and alternate aftermarket part numbers.

Just click the “Part Number Search” tab at the top of the catalog and try entering the numbers stamped on the mystery part or any packaging. Use the “*” for wildcards like illegible characters. Click on a part number in the search results to see some vehicles the part fits.

Part Number Search tab

For example, the mystery Ford part in the photo has F33F 9B989 stamped on it. The B is kind of blurry and could be an 8. Ford sometimes inserts a few extra characters at the beginning or end of their part numbers. So I do a Part Number Search with the wildcard symbol * in place of the blurry B and at the beginning and end.

The search for *f33f9*989* pulls up throttle position sensors (TPS) by Standard Motor Products (SMP) and Airtex/Wells. The catalog photos look like the part and clicking on either the SMP or Airtex part numbers returns a list of some of the vehicles the part fits. My wife’s ’93 Tempo is included in the list of vehicles! I look at all the TPSs listed in the main Part Catalog under Fuel/Air for the Tempo and see additional TPS choices by Delphi, Motorcraft, Original Engine Management, etc.

Now I slap myself on the forehead and remember that the mystery part was the old TPS that I pulled off the Tempo months ago and stuck on the shelf just in case the Tempo was not happy with the new TPS I installed.

The old TPS is now sitting on my desk. The question is will I throw it away or rediscover it and do another Part Number Search a year or two from now…

Dennis's 1978 Cadillac Eldorado

Dennis's 1978 Cadillac Eldorado

This is my 1978 Cadillac Eldorado, which has just over 19,600 miles on it! Most of the replacement parts such as shocks, hoses, belts, spark plugs, wires, etc., are from RockAuto. I wanted to keep as many original ACDelco parts as I could, and "Rock" carries a lot of ACDelco parts. Also saved me a bunch of money in the process.

She runs and rides like new. Looks great too!

Thanks RockAuto!

Dennis in Arkansas
