Another Happy Customer!

I recently purchased left and right side headlight assemblies for my 2004 Mustang. RockAuto's service was awesome!

My first impression was the professional box packaging. Product was 100% as promised. I'm still shocked I saved over $200. Will definitely continue to use RockAuto for all my replacement parts.

Remy Automotive Europe

See what we have from Remy

Remy started out in 1896 building magnetos for some of the first cars. In 1927 Remy and Delco merged to form Delco Remy, a General Motors Division that was the world's largest manufacturer of auto electrical equipment from 1928 to 1993. RockAuto is a family business. Two of the family grandfathers spent their entire careers at Delco Remy. In 1994 Delco Remy became independent of GM and subsequently adopted the name Remy International, Inc.

RockAuto has long carried Remy parts for North American specification cars and is now pleased to offer Remy parts for European spec. vehicles as well. Remy is one of the leading suppliers of high quality new and remanufactured parts in Europe. Besides its strong OE-presence in starters and alternators, Remy Automotive Europe now offers a whole portfolio of different product groups, marketed under the Remy brand: Brake Calipers, Ignition Distributors, Steering Racks and Pumps.

Go to the RockAuto catalog for the full line of Remy parts for European and North American spec. cars whether you drive a Vauxhall, Ford, Fiat, Mazda, Mercedes, Chevrolet, Toyota or you name it.

Repair Mistakes & Blunders

Ouch!

I am always jealous when I hear friends talk about working on cars with their fathers when they were young. My father has many positive attributes but, in the words of my grandfather, "Doesn’t know which end of a screwdriver to hold". While I have always been handy, I never worked on a car until I was in my mid 20's (c. 1975) and couldn’t afford the costs of car maintenance. A friend taught me how to change the oil in my wife’s VW Bug and another friend taught me to tune up my Toyota a few years later (more money savings).

Those projects went fine, but around this time a third friend bought a 1950 Willy’s Jeepster. He wanted to re-build the brakes and I volunteered to help. Neither of us had any idea of what we were doing, nor did we have a shop manual to guide us. So, we jacked up the car and removed the left wheel and brake drum. We studied the brake system for a while, trying to figure out how everything worked, but needed to see more. So my friend asked me to get in the car and step on the brake slowly so he could watch it in action. We quickly learned an important lesson: Never step on a brake pedal with the drum removed! The explosion was impressive and my friend was very lucky he was standing in front of the brakes, not to one side. His brake shoes and hydraulics were completely scattered around the garage.

But, we now knew a lot more about how the brakes worked, so we gathered up all of the parts, and then carefully dismantled the other side to see how everything went together. We put it all back together using drum brake hardware kit, and it worked! I realized that I could do this and was inspired to buy my own project car: a 1966 Sunbeam Alpine, which I still have.

My Catalytic Converter Is Safe

RockAuto

I maintain my cars. I change the fuel filters and oxygen sensors. Therefore, the catalytic converters on my cars are probably working at peak efficiency and I do not need to worry about them. Not so fast! Just read a newspaper or ask a police officer about the surge in catalytic converter thefts.

Catalytic converters contain only small amounts of the valuable metals platinum, palladium and rhodium, but those metals can now cost well more than $1000 an ounce (28 g). A scrap or stolen and sold as scrap catalytic converter with its insides intact can now fetch $25 to $220.

Those high prices attract more and “better” thieves. They also increase the trade in scrap catalytic converters. There are now online businesses buying scrap catalytic converters. Just ship them the catalytic converter and get paid via PayPal. Ship them enough catalytic converters and sometimes your shipping is free! Both local junkyards and distant, online buyers can watch for suspicious (shiny, new) “scrap” catalytic converters and notify the police. But thieves definitely now have more potential buyers than they did a few years ago.

RockAuto.com has replacement catalytic converters for many vehicles for a few hundred dollars or less. Unfortunately, thieves sometimes use battery powered electric saws to quickly cut out the catalytic converter. That means the surrounding exhaust pipes and oxygen sensors as well as the catalytic converter must be replaced. Repair bills including labor can easily top $1500.

So how can an owner protect their catalytic converter? Park in a garage or safe spot where the sound of an electric saw or thieves under the car would attract attention. Drive an old car. Newer catalytic converters contain more precious metals. Drive a vehicle with less ground clearance. Thieves can quickly scoot under an SUV. Engrave your license plate or drivers license number on the catalytic converter.

Recent police reports from around the world often mention newer Toyota SUVs. They are numerous, high off the ground and have catalytic converters with relatively dense precious metal content. It also makes sense that a thief would specialize on one common vehicle. He only has to carry one wrench and can learn to finish his crime in minutes. Higher risk SUV owners that have to park in unsecured areas might have a catalytic converter sensor added to their vehicle’s alarm system. They could put tack welds on the catalytic converter nuts. Or they might consider buying one of the new catalytic converter mechanical lock systems or rigging up their own using cable, chain, or some other (non-flammable) materials.

My family’s newest car is still my wife’s ’93 Ford Tempo. It only has a few inches of ground clearance and is kept in a garage that shares a wall with my bedroom. I can probably still sleep soundly at night knowing my catalytic converter is safe. Despite the crime wave, keeping up with maintenance and repairs still has the biggest impact on the life span of my Tempo’s and most other cars’ catalytic converters.

Shaun's 1980 Dodge D150 Custom

Shaun's 1980 Dodge D150 Custom

This is my 1980 Dodge D150 Custom. I bought it about 18 months ago from the second owner, who had owned it for the last ten years and hadn't used it much. The first owner was the Town of Lethbridge in Alberta. I have been on the search for a long time for a stepside Dodge as there aren't many around especially in this part of the country. Shortly after I got it home I began a complete restoration of the truck, which is not an easy task as there aren't a lot of aftermarket parts Dodge Trucks like there are for Chevy or Ford. However RockAuto was able to get me parts that the limited Dodge aftermarket or the local parts stores either couldn't supply me with, or for a lot cheaper even after the shipping costs!

The truck has been completely dismantled, sandblasted, and repainted. The driveline got a complete teardown as well. The engine is a 225 "Super Six" backed by a 727 "Loadflite" transmission and a 8 3/8 rear end. The truck also features all new suspension, steering and braking components, new fuel, brake, and transmission cooler lines, a reworked wiring harness, and a freshened up interior. Essentially it's a brand new truck.

Thanks to RockAuto for helping me finish my project!

Shaun in Ontario, Canada
