Repair Mistakes & Blunders

Ouch!

I love reading the repair blunders! It always brings back fond, and some not so fond, memories of my 20 years working as an auto mechanic.

One of my most memorable repair blunders started as someone else's blunder. I had the work order for an 80's Cadillac which someone had replaced the rear shocks on. The issue was a sagging rear end and a weird clunking sound over bumps. After verifying the problem, I realized someone had installed the wrong shocks. I brought the car in and put it up in the air on the lift. I supported the rear end and proceeded to remove the nuts from the lower shock mounting bolts. I used a large hammer to remove the bolts from the mount.

Upon hitting the final bolt, the car catapulted into the air taking a nose dive off the lift leaving me standing there staring at the underside of a vertical land yacht, with the hammer still in my hand, and mouth gaping wide open.

Another death defying day in the garage!

Don't Dust Your Diesel

Did you ever run your shop vac or any vacuum cleaner a little too long without changing the filter? The exhaust air coming out of the vacuum starts to smell a little stale and dusty. The vacuum cleaner motor might actually sound as if it is working harder as it strains to suck air through a clogged filter.

Diesel engine air intakes operate more similar to a vacuum cleaner than to a gasoline engine. A gasoline engine uses airflow to control engine speed. If the air filter is clogged then engine performance decreases but a gasoline engine does not make additional effort to try to suck air through the dirty filter.

A diesel engine uses fuel flow to control engine speed while always drawing in a fairly consistent high volume of air. If the air filter is clogged then the diesel engine will strain to pull in that same amount of air. Like a vacuum cleaner or a kid sucking up a milk shake through a straw, a diesel will pull harder as it tries to get what it wants.

And like a vacuum cleaner motor, a diesel may pull so hard that it pulls dust out of the clogged air filter into the engine. Dirt is bad news, especially with the tight tolerances in modern diesel engines. A clogged air filter may reduce the performance of a modern gasoline engine, but a clogged air filter can damage a diesel engine.

Diesel air filters often cost more than gasoline engine air filters because while both filters stop dirt, the diesel filter also has to maintain the same high volume of air flow and resist letting dirt escape. Regularly changing the air filter is crucial.

Some vehicle manufacturers, Ford for example, use an air restriction indicator (see photo) to help diesel owners see when their air filters are starting to clog. Typically, a visible plunger in a clear tube moves higher as the filter clogs. Once the plunger moves to the top, a circuit is closed and a warning light illuminates in the instrument cluster. Of course, it is best to change the air filter long before the warning light activates.

Fiat recently came back to North America, after a 30 year absence, and it has generated a lot of excitement with its Abarth version of the new Fiat 500. My Fiat-Abarth is the Great Grandfather to the new Abarth. True to the Abarth philosophy of making a small car faster and more powerful, this car, which originally carried a 750 CC Abarth motor with 48 Hp., is now powered by a highly modified 1198 CC Abarth OT-1000 100 Hp. power plant coupled to a Hewland Mk4 Quick Change transaxle.

I've owned this car for almost 50 years and all during that time it has been licensed and driven. The 750 Abarth shares many parts with the stock Fiat 600. RockAuto has many of the normal wear and tear parts always available to keep this Abarth happy and healthy. Thanks for stocking parts for this car as they are very hard to find these days!
