Repair Mistakes & Blunders

Ouch!

I decided I needed to add a fuel pressure gauge to my 1980 Fiat Spider, carbureted version. As I set about my tool selection on the cowl in preparation for this task, I included a can of red pop for refreshment.

The task was simple. Remove enough of the rubber hose to accommodate the length of the gauge, add the gauge and clamp it in place. Well, I forgot several things along the way to accomplishing this minor job. The length of rubber hose with metal cased gauge on the end was top heavy. The hose was full of fuel, so it dribbled about my hands, and the work area quite readily. Eventually the top heavy assembly tipped over and the metal case of the gauge touched the exposed positive stud of my alternator, creating a spark.

You guessed it; instant engine bay fire. I quickly discovered that no amount of blowing and puffing from me was going to put out this fire. Looking behind me I was reminded that another vehicle sat between me and the fire extinguisher. What to do? If I let go of the fuel line, more fuel would spill. Then I recalled the can of red pop; which I poured over the flames to extinguish the fire.

Lessons learned:

  1. Always disconnect the battery when working under the hood.
  2. Always store fire extinguishers in easy to reach places.
  3. Red pop can be used for more than just refreshment.

Benjamin's 1998 Buick Regal GS

Benjamin's 1998 Buick Regal GS

This is my unique 1998 Buick Regal GS. What? Those are a dime a dozen, how can you call that unique? I can because this Regal is far from stock. The hood/ram air on my car is inspired by a 1970 Buick GSX. The hood also include portholes (which was made popular a long time ago by Buick) for another touch of Buick heritage. The badges are from the '86 Buick Century Gran Sport, but fit very well with the car and heritage retaining the Power6 logo. The engine in the car is out of a 2006 Grand Prix (L32) and was originally supercharged, but now turbocharged. Currently I am probably the only one running this setup as I use the Australian Holden Commodore intake with this turbo kit.

I have bought many parts from RockAuto for this car (and for all of my other projects) including suspension components and LS1 brake calipers. These, along with many other RockAuto parts over the years has helped build this car into what it is today.
