Another Happy Customer!

Great place to buy parts!

This company is the best place for online auto parts. They have things that the local auto stores don't stock or can even get their hands on.

I work for a parts store and purchase at least half of my parts from RockAuto.

Monroe OESpectrum Shocks & Struts Now Available at RockAuto

Monroe OESpectrum Shocks & Struts

Is it time to replace the struts on your 2000 Volkswagen Jetta? Maybe you need new struts on your 2003 Jaguar X-Type or shocks for your 2007 Nissan Versa? If you are planning a shock or strut replacement you’re in luck. RockAuto is now carrying Monroe OESpectrum struts.

The Monroe OESpectrum struts are engineered specifically for foreign nameplate vehicles and feature the latest global original equipment valving technologies:

  • Twin Technology - Impact Control Valve (ICV), which delivers exceptional control under virtually all driving conditions, and a patented Low Speed Tunability (LST) piston design that isolates impact-related noise, vibration and harshness.
  • All Weather Fluid - Contains special modifiers to reduce friction and ensure smooth rod reaction.
  • Rod Displaced Valving - Tuned specifically for each application, this valving automatically adjusts to road extremes to provide consistency and ride comfort.
  • Fluon Banded Piston - The fluon band provides consistent sealing between the piston and pressure tube which delivers better control and increased durability.
  • Hardened & Chromed Plated Piston Rod - Long service life.
  • Nitrogen Gas Charged - For improved ride and handling, helps maintain tire to road contact by reducing aeration.
  • Unique Rod Guide & Single Lip Seal - Bronze reinforced rod guide bearing and special seal provides longer service life and consistent performance.

Forum of the Month

The Forward Look Network

The Forward Look Network is a worldwide family of over 4,500 owners & fans of Chrysler Corporation’s 1955-1961 vehicles. These vehicles embodied The Forward Look of Motion, Chrysler’s corporate motto of the era. The trend-setting designs created by renowned automotive stylist Virgil Exner rocked the stodgy automotive world of the early 1950’s, sending Ford and GM into a frenzy to try and catch up. Engineering innovations such as torsion bar suspensions, the Hemi, Poly, and Wedge engines, pushbutton transmissions, and unibody construction rocketed the Forward Look vehicles years ahead of the competition. The original muscle car, the Chrysler 300, led Chrysler Corp’s lineup of performance cars – including the Plymouth Fury, Dodge D500, and DeSoto Adventurer – into the winner’s circle.

Our “no fees, no officers, no headaches” club features an email list, web forums, and worldwide regional groups, along with an archive of over 700,000 pages of relevant information. If you are interested in these cars as well, we would love to meet you!

Repair Mistakes & Blunders

Ouch!

Just a few years back, my wife and I were planning to drive to Florida from northern Ohio for a much needed vacation. The night before we were to leave, I thought I would check out our 2003 Nissan Altima before making the 18 hour trip. I pulled the car into the garage and set the parking brake. I then changed the oil, rotated the tires, and replaced the front brake pads. I tried to perform all three tasks simultaneously to decrease my time spent in the cold. I had everything done when I was called into the house for dinner. I came back out to the garage to admire my completed task and decided to start the car and check the oil one more time. I started it up and then shut it down and checked the oil. It was good. I got back into the car to pull it out of the garage. I pressed the brake to release the gearshift, released the parking brake and as soon I had hit reverse the car took off through the garage door which was still going up.

I had failed to pump the brakes before putting the car in gear and there was not enough pressure built back up in the brake system to hold the car back. Needless to say I had to make a quick run to the lumber yard to buy a new garage door to replace the one I had just put up two months earlier and was now bent into a U-shape. I also had to put it up the same night to make sure no one got into the garage while I was gone. The worst part was I had to call my brother over to give me a hand with the garage door and I had to explain the whole thing to him. He got a good laugh at my expense. We did get to leave the next morning with a few scratches on the car and a huge dent in my ego.

Automotive Trivia

Automotive Trivia

What was the original meaning of the Audi logo, four interlocking rings?

Current Audi Logo

A. The rings symbolized the merger of four German motor vehicle brands (Audi, DKW, Horch, Wanderer) to form car manufacturer, Auto Union, in the early 1930s.
B. The interlocking rings were the idea of Audi board member, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, in 1912. They represent "design, function, durability, and efficiency".
C. Until 1931 the rings were slightly ovoid and represented chain, the primary product of Audi (originally Audi Kette AG) until the advent of the automobile.

Refrigerant Changes Lead to Higher AC Repair Costs

RockAuto

Owners of 1994 and newer cars, this is the time to fix your air conditioner. Not just because warm summer days are coming (hurray!) and RockAuto has AC compressors, condensers, evaporators, and other AC parts that we are eager to sell. Fix your AC because you will soon officially be joining the owners of 1993 and older cars in having environmentally unfriendly and expensive refrigerant under your hoods.

In 1994, R-12 (branded as Freon) refrigerant was replaced with R-134a in new vehicle AC systems. R-12 had contributed to holes in the earth’s ozone layer. Production of new R-12 was banned in the United States and most other countries. The price of recycled R-12 skyrocketed. R-12 smuggling became as lucrative as drug smuggling. The last time I had an AC system charged, the R-12 cost $60 a pound.

Now R-134a is on the chopping block because it has a “global warming potential” (GWP) of 1400. Carbon dioxide is the baseline with a GWP of 1. This means R-134a is a greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming 1400 times as much as an equal amount of CO2.

Regulations now specify that refrigerants have a GWP of less than 150. New vehicles in Europe are required to have low GWP refrigerant starting this year. In the US, low GWP refrigerant will be phased in from 2013 to 2016 depending on the vehicle manufacturer.

The preferred new refrigerant is something called R-1234yf. It has a GWP of only 4. It requires special lubricating oils and handling equipment. It is also slightly flammable. AC fittings will be changed to help prevent the mixing of R-1234yf with R-134a.

This time around the production of the old refrigerant, R-134a, will not be banned. But R-134a will be federally taxed so its price is forced up from about $10 a pound to about $40 a pound, the expected price of R-1234yf. The tax is intended to further discourage people from attempting to use R-134a in one of the upcoming new cars designed to use R-1234yf.

This means refrigerant for the typical two pound R-134a AC charge will cost $80 instead of $20. That lost $60 might buy an AC O-ring set, an AC receiver drier or help pay for labor or other needed air conditioning parts. If your AC system needs work or frequent recharging, you will likely save some money by fixing it sooner rather than later.

Stan's 1978 Ford Thunderbird
Stan's 1978 Ford Thunderbird

This is my 1978 Ford Thunderbird. I am the original owner of this vehicle and put the 166,486 miles on it. It has a storied life going to college with my son and countless interstate trips to many places in the US. It has only put me afoot two times in the 33 years I have owned the car. Once when the kids filled the gas tank with dirt and the other time when the timing gear failed. It is used now for show and fun runs with the local Thunderbird club.

Over the last eight years, the car has won several first place trophies in its class at juried car shows. It is in original condition and I have used RockAuto for many hard to find parts such as the valves for the vacuum system and the EGR system.

Sincerely,
Stan in Texas
